THE WRITER'S COMPANION — RELEASE 1.0

A quiet, typewriter-inspired writing desk for Linux.

The Writer's Companion is freeware and is currently available for Linux only.
It is a standalone desktop writing application designed for writers who want
an uncluttered place to compose plain-text documents using a typewriter-style
interface.

INSTALLATION
------------
1. Download writers_companion_v1.0.zip.
2. Save it in your Downloads folder.
3. Open a terminal and paste the following commands:

   cd "$HOME/Downloads" &&
   rm -rf writers_companion_v1.0 &&
   mkdir -p writers_companion_v1.0 &&
   unzip -o writers_companion_v1.0.zip -d writers_companion_v1.0 &&
   cd writers_companion_v1.0 &&
   chmod +x install.sh &&
   ./install.sh

The installer creates an application launcher and installs the app to:
   ~/Documents/Writers_Companion_App/

Your writing documents default to:
   ~/Documents/Writers_Companion/

FEATURES

- Plain-text document creation, opening and saving.
- Typewriter-style presets using bundled fonts.
- A4, Letter and Foolscap paper-size choices.
- Typeface size, line spacing, and left/right margin controls.
- Approximate page count in the status line; page numbers are not inserted
  into the text itself.
- Optional night mode, sounds, shortcut guide, scrollbar and file path.
- Autosave prompts, recovery snapshots and quit-time backups.

LIMITATIONS
-----------
This is a plain-text writing application, not a full word processor or print
layout tool. The page count is an estimate; actual printed pagination may
vary. It does not embed page breaks, headers, footers or page numbers into
saved text. The application has been developed for Linux and is not packaged
for Windows or macOS.

Read those files for the relevant font terms.
